The Bolobedu Solar Power Plant is a 148 MW solar facility located in Limpopo Province, South Africa. Developed by Voltalia, the project represents a significant contribution to the country's energy transition and is one of the largest solar power plants in South Africa dedicated to supplying renewable electricity to a single industrial customer through a 20-year wheeling agreement.
The plant generates approximately 300 GWh of renewable electricity annually, enough to meet the equivalent annual electricity consumption of around 425,000 inhabitants, while avoiding more than 237,000 tonnes of CO₂ emissions each year.
Officially inaugurated in August 2026, Bolobedu reflects Voltalia's commitment to delivering renewable energy infrastructure that combines environmental benefits with long-term economic and social value for local communities.
Delivering renewable energy for South African industry
Bolobedu supplies renewable electricity to Richards Bay Minerals through South Africa's electricity network under a long-term corporate power purchase arrangement. By supporting industrial decarbonization while increasing the share of renewable energy in the country's energy mix, the project contributes to a more resilient and sustainable energy future.
Creating lasting value for local communities
Beyond clean energy generation, Bolobedu has delivered tangible benefits to neighboring communities throughout the development and construction phases.
Around 800 local residents from host communities were employed during construction and received training in areas including engineering support, solar panel installation and health, safety and environmental practices.
The project also supported local businesses and entrepreneurs, including transport cooperatives, community suppliers and women-led enterprises, helping strengthen local economic participation and skills development.
Through ongoing stakeholder engagement and community development initiatives, Voltalia continues to work with local partners to create long-term social and economic value in the region.
